Local discussion groups related to the book are also popping up around the nation, including one starting Wednesday in Tempe. That meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Keller Williams, 3920 S. Rural Road No. 110.
Tempe resident and motivational speaker Jason Walters is organizing the Tempe discussion night to talk about Tolle’s works.
Walters said he first read The Power of Now eight years ago, and it changed his outlook on life. He said he is happy that Winfrey is bringing the author’s ideas to the forefront for more readers.
“What she puts out there, the world looks at,” he said. “It was perfect timing for me then to go out there. It’s not about Oprah or Eckhart, it’s about the message of the book.”
Walters is calling his group “This Is It,” a reference to the live-in-the-moment message of Tolle’s books.
Tempe resident and massage therapist Margherita Liotti found Walters’ group by searching Winfrey’s Web site for reading groups.
“I’m curious to see who will come,” Liotti said of the meeting.
She said it is her first time participating in a book club. She said she read The Power of Now a few years ago and is in the midst of reading A New Earth. Although she’s doesn’t watch Winfrey’s show too often, Liotti has started doing the online exercises and said she hopes to catch the next Web cast.
She said Tolle’s books deal with changing the way a person thinks to become more aware.
“It helps you become more in tune with yourself,” she said. “If you listen to what you’re saying to yourself, sometimes there’s a gap.”
Jeanette Anderson, a south Phoenix real estate broker, has also just begun reading A New Earth and decided to join Walters’ group.
“(The book) just arrived yesterday, but I’m already halfway through it,” she said.
She said she hopes that meeting in a discussion group will contribute to long-term change.
“You’re not going to give up ingrained ways of thinking, behaving and processing without some support,” she said.
