Andrew Case’s “The Rant,” a story about an African-American man shot and killed by the New York City police, will receive a staged reading as part of Salt Lake Acting Company’s New Play Sounding Series. The drama unravels different views of the shooting - from a white cop who swears it was a “good kill” to the man’s mother, who swears the shooting was a cold-blooded murder - while a reporter and an investigator for a civilian review board attempt to get to the heart of the incident. Promoters call the work “a searing, breathtakingly complex look” behind daily headlines. The free reading is at 7 p.m. Monday at the theater, 168 W. 500 North, Salt Lake City.

Dashing through the airwaves: Rodgers Memorial Theatre’s production of “1940’s Radio Hour,” directed by Jim Christian, opens Friday and plays through Dec. 23.
This musical comedy about the live broadcast of a musical variety show from the Hotel Astor’s Algonquin Room on Dec. 21, 1942, includes classic tunes such as “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “Blue Moon,” as well as holiday classics such as “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Jingle Bells.”
The family show plays at 7:30 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays at 292 E. Pages Lane, Centerville. Tickets are %26#36;13 to %26#36;16 (%26#36;9 to %26#36;12 children/students/seniors), available by calling 801-298-1302.

New lights in the east, um, Advertisementsouth: Tuacahn Center for the Arts presents a live Nativity scene as part of its annual Festival of Lights holiday celebration on Friday. The event, featuring 250,000 lights, continues through Dec. 23.
Santa Claus will vist Tuacahn’s outdoor plaza at 6:30 p.m., while the Nativity display, with live animals and some 60 volunteer actors, shows nightly at 7 and 8 (except Dec. 1). Rides on the Old Salty Train and concerts by local musicians are also part of the event. Tickets are %26#36;2, or %26#36;10 per family, with the train ride an additional %26#36;1. To make reservations, call 435-652-3300. The amphitheater is at 1100 Tuacahn Drive, Ivins.

A North Pole comedy: Pickleville Playhouse opens a holiday production of “Santa’s Elves: A North Pole Musical” Friday. The show plays at Utah State University’s Eccles Conference Center, Logan, through Dec. 22.
The original show tells the story of elves who, due to a funding cut in arts donations, set out on an adventure to provide gifts for needy kids throughout the world. One of their schemes includes a North Pole telethon, with a guest appearance by you-know-who. Director Andrea Davis terms the comedy “a feel-good, laugh-your-guts-out” kind of show.
Tickets are %26#36;13.95 (%26#36;7.95 children), with a buffet by Hamilton’s Steak and Seafood served before the show for an additional fee. Call 435-755-0968 for reservations and show times, or visit www.picklevillechristmas.com.

Another Scrooge: Off Broadway Theatre presents “Christmas Carol II,” a parody of Charles Dickens’ holiday classic, which opens Friday and plays through Dec. 29.
The family-friendly comedy features Eric R. Jensen as Ebenezer Scrooge, after he so famously was visited by holiday spirits, but he still seems a bit lost, as he’s been giving out money instead of gifts from the heart - which prompts visits by a new slate of mysterious Christmas ghosts.
Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Dec. 15. Tickets are %26#36;16 (%26#36;8-%26#36;12 children/students/seniors/military), available by calling 801-355-4628 or visiting www.theobt.com.
Off Broadway also hosts “Laughing Stock,” the long-running Improv comedy troupe, with 10 p.m. shows on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are %26#36;14 (%26#36;8-%26#36;10 students/children). The theater is at 272 S. Main St., Salt Lake City.
