Anyone who thinks the Morton Arboretum is just a place to see plants can’t see the concerts and theater events for the trees. Look a little closer and you’ll find a full entertainment venue where families, friends and couples can enjoy outdoor concerts, embark on a scenic bike hike or gather for a musical evening under the stars.
This summer’s schedule of entertainment begins Saturday, June 14, with a performance by Emmylou Harris. The 12-time Grammy winner and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, will perform the first of three concerts in the In Tune With Trees, concert series.
Harris plans to perform her familiar hits, including “If I Could Only Win Your Love” and “Together Again,” and those who attend her Arboretum concert will be among the first to hear her upcoming album, “All I Intended To Be,” set for release June 10.
Arboretum spokeswoman Gina Tedesco said music and theater have long been part of the fun at the Arboretum, and such events have become important fundraisers for the facility.
“It allows visitors to enjoy the fine arts with the beauty of the outdoors,” she said.
The Arboretum’s outdoor concert space offers lawn seating for as many as 4,000 guests, many of whom make themselves comfortable with lawn chairs, blankets, even tables and picnic dinners.
Meals can be ordered in advance and picked up before the performance, and beverages, including wine, are available from vendors.
The In Tune With Trees series continues July 12 with Paula Cole, winner of the Grammy for best new artist in 1998.
Pop star Chris Isaak comes to the Arboretum for the final summer concert Aug. 16. The music of two-time Grammy nominee Isaak is reminiscent of Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.
Fun for the family
All ages are welcome at all of the Arboretum concerts, but the shows scheduled for July 12 and 13 are especially for families and little ones. Ralph’s World will return to the Morton Arboretum for two shows — 11 a.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. Ralph’s World is all the rage with the preschool and elementary crowd, and the audience for this show is sure to take up every last blade of grass on the Arboretum lawn.
