Where: The Peninsula on Lake Oconee in Eatonton
Christopher Oquendo/Special(ENLARGE)John Huss and Catherine Powell and their kids %26mdash; Mimi (from left), Lizzie and Charlie Powell %26mdash; spend almost every weekend at the lake in the warm months.Christopher Oquendo/Special(ENLARGE)The family owns a three-bedroom, three-bath condo on Lake Oconee. The windows provide great views, ‘like being in a tree fort,’ says Catherine Powell.
When purchased: August 2007
Their home: A three-bedroom, three-bath condo. “It’s all glass. It’s like being in a tree fort. It’s amazing,” Catherine said. The layout also fit their family needs, particularly for visits by Powell’s children (Mimi, a sophomore at Georgetown University; Lizzie, a freshman at the University of Georgia; and Charlie, a student at St. Pius X Catholic High School in Atlanta) and their friends, sometimes reaching 20 guests. “We usually do have a crowd. The kids usually don’t want to go just with us. They want to go with their friends.”
How often they’re there: Almost every weekend in the summer. During the fall and winter, it’s a little less often because of football games and school activities.
How far from home: About an hour from the Emory University area. “You can go down even for the day,” she said. “That’s what we love.”
How she knows she’s there: “When you drive down I-20 and you’re getting ready to get to Exit 130 and you’re crossing over the water, that’s when it first starts to hit me,” she said. “I immediately feel the stress of Atlanta rush off of me. The second you get out of the car and breathe that fresh air, you just relax. It is the greatest little haven.”
What they love about Lake Oconee: The opportunity for quiet relaxation. “It’s really fun to sit out on the porch in the rocking chairs and wrap up in a blanket and read a good book. It’s so peaceful,” she said.
What they do when they’re there: She often paints out on the deck before her family and other guests get up. The rest of the day is spent on personal watercraft, boating and reading on the deck, being “totally lazy,” Catherine said.
A special connection: John and Catherine were married last summer at the lake. Their reception was at Cuscowilla, following with a Lowcountry boil and live music at The Peninsula.
